Montalvo Flamenko Jazz (formerly Pachuco Flamenko Jazz) is a project led by Jheinsen Montalvo (El Pachuco), Montreal guitarist, of Salvadorian origin, having learned Flamenco Guitar in Andalusia (Spain) and from international masters. It is a group of variable ensembles: quintet, quartet, trio or duo. Inspired by the flamenco/jazz movement, it features original music after his self-titled EP. The repertoire consists of bulerías, alegrías, tangos and other ''palos flamenco'' with jazzy arrangements which allow the remarkable improvisation of high caliber musicians. We find the spirit and rhythm of flamenco alongside the sophisticated jazz harmony. Set as a duo, guitar-piano, for this occasion.

David Ryshpan, originally from Toronto, has been a fixture in Montreal’s music community for the past decade as a pianist, composer, arranger, DJ and journalist. Since moving to Montreal to pursue his studies at McGill University, he maintains an active career as a sideman with Haitian rapper Vox Sambou, renowned jazz guitarist and educator Gary Schwartz and the samba-rock pioneer Jorge Ben Jor. He currently leads the samba-jazz group, Trio Bruxo, and is the co-creator of the staged song cycle Alicuanta.

Alex Bellegarde’s dynamic Tuesday jam session has become one of Montreal’s hippest weekly jazz events. The first set fires up with Bellegarde and his trio, playing host to a range of well known talents from the Montreal scene as well as musicians from out of town. The jam opens in the second set, to any jazz musician with the confidence to step up and play…there’s an unspoken rule though: “If you can’t keep up, you shouldn’t be on stage”. A great place to play and chill…. the jam continues on into the early hours!

Born in France, classically trained guitarist Christine Tassan moved to Québec in 1994 and has since played with a variety of musicians, namely Charles Papasoff, Jean Viau and Pierrot Fournier. In 1997 she was awarded the FrancoFolies de Montréal's Coup de Coeur prize. Inspired by the music of guitarist Django Reinhardt and European Gypsy jazz, she turned to jazz music, starting with a duo in 2000, followed by a quintet playing acoustic swing in the vein of Reinhardt's Hot Club de France. With her bands Gadjo Swing and les Imposteures, Christine Tassan created a unique repertoire that offers a mix of original Reinhardt compositions, traditional gypsy pieces, swing waltzes and French chansons with a Gypsy jazz touch.

Saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jean-Pierre Zanella is very much in demand on Québec’s music scene. After finishing his Master degree in Jazz at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester N.Y., Zanella has played the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Saxophone International Congress in Nuremberg in 1982. That same year he recorded with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble and Saxology which won the «Downbeat Recording Award» for the best jazz group of the year. Zanella has also participated in many jazz events. In France he played at the Europa Festival du Mans, Mulhouse Jazz Festival and in St-Malo. In Canada he played arround the country and he performed in many cities in Brazil. He received the Montreal International Jazz Festival 2011 Oscar Peterson Award.

Michel St-Pierre and Lise-Anne Ross form a very dynamic and explosive guitar duo. Fueled by their mutual passion for Django Reinhardt's music, they decided many years ago to get together with Claude Kaufman on saxophone and Daniel Labrosse on upright bass to bring this music and culture to the masses. Their repertoire touches 30's & 40's Swing Jazz, bossa novas, ballades and even a few Édith Piaf waltzes, all done in the manouche style.

|SONIA JOHNSON FêTE LES 100 ANS DELLA FITZGERALD|
Juno award winner Sonia Johnson is one of the best Canadian jazz vocalists. Her eclectic career, marked by instructive and inspirational meetings, eloquently testifies this. In her experiences, we have to remember the stages she shared with renowned artists such as Vic Vogel, François Bourassa or Karen Young, to name a few. In the summer of 2014, she had the joy of sharing a double bill with Diane Tell at Festival Pully-Lavaux in Switzerland, and she repeated the feat with Cyrille Aimée at the Festival de jazz de Québec. Composer, lyricist, arranger and producer, Sonia Johnson gained recognition with projects warmly welcomed by the industry as well as fans, namely the affectionate and well mastered Le Carré de nos amours, a true masterpiece that earned her the Juno for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2012. In 2014, she had a second nomination at the Junos and ADISQ for Triades—performed with singers Annie Poulain and Charles Biddle Jr.

Fascinated by the music of French Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, Taiwanese-Canadian guitarist Denis Chang’s spent his formative years alongside the Gypsies of France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, where he learned to play the style of music that is now known as Gypsy Jazz. There, he learned to understand the Romany way of life, and was completely immersed in the culture. He is one of the few gadje (non-Gypsy) to have learned Romanes, the language of the Gypsies. In concerts, he is one of the very few outside of the Gypsy community to sing rare Gypsy songs in Romanes. Audiences can expect to learn more about Gypsy culture and the meaning behind these rare songs!

2007 recipient of the prestigious Oscar Peterson Award at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, pianist and composer François Bourassa leads one of the most active bands on the Canadian jazz scene. The latest recording, Rasstones, is the seventh in a widely acclaimed discography. His quartet has toured on three continents, including recent concerts in Beijing, in major jazz festivals of the world, and in legendary places such as Dizzy’s Club (Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York) during the memorable Québec Jazz series.
