6 à 8 AVEC MONTALVO FLAMENKO JAZZ

Montalvo Flamenko Jazz (formerly Pachuco Flamenko Jazz) is a project led by Jheinsen Montalvo (El Pachuco), Montreal guitarist, of Salvadorian origin, having learned Flamenco Guitar in Andalusia (Spain) and from international masters. It is a group of variable ensembles: quintet, quartet, trio or duo. Inspired by the flamenco/jazz movement, it features original music after his self-titled EP. The repertoire consists of bulerías, alegrías, tangos and other ''palos flamenco'' with jazzy arrangements which allow the remarkable improvisation of high caliber musicians. We find the spirit and rhythm of flamenco alongside the sophisticated jazz harmony. Set as a duo, guitar-piano, for this occasion.

Alex Bellegarde’s dynamic Tuesday jam session has become one of Montreal’s hippest weekly jazz events. The jam opens in the second set, to any jazz musician with the confidence to step up and play…there’s an unspoken rule though: “If you can’t keep up, you shouldn’t be on stage”. AL MCLEAN PRéSENTE: BIG AL’S CHRISTMAS SURPRISE

Hands down Montreal's preeminent talent of the Jazz saxophone, Al McLean owns the night in this grand old Jazz city. Mentoring countless students of the music, McLean's brute force, and seemingly bottomless depths as an improviser keep his professional cohorts honest. The bar he sets is sky high, with an equally nimble command of bebop, and more avant garde repertoire rooted in the language of Coltrane. McLean is also a sought after saxophone restoration expert. Specializing in vintage instruments from the first half of the 20th Century, McLean makes the old horns sing. He can be found most nights of the week in Montreal's numerous Jazz hot spots, glittering vintage horn in hand, wowing audiences, inspiring (or unnerving) his band mates.

DANIEL THOUIN ET SES INVITéS

Daniel Thouin was 7 when he first sat behind the family organ. Ten years later, he was studying classical piano. Soon, he started flirting with the jazz scene. Then, he took an interest in electronica and pop music, collaborating with the likes of Mara Tremblay, Yann Perreau and Marie-Jo Thério. In 2002, Thouin assembled the Large Ensemble, an all-star local group mixing jazz and rock. Informed by Miles Davis' late sixties experiments, Thouin and friends (Yannick Rieu, Olivier Langevin...) used the band to flex their improvisational muscles.

LA VEILLE DU JOUR DE L’AN AVEC SONIA JOHNSON, MARIANNE TRUDEL, ADRIAN VEDADY, JIM DOXAS & JASON STILLMAN

Juno award winner Sonia Johnson is one of the best Canadian jazz vocalists. Her eclectic career, marked by instructive and inspirational meetings, eloquently testifies this. In her experiences, we have to remember the stages she shared with renowned artists such as Vic Vogel, François Bourassa or Karen Young, to name a few. In the summer of 2014, she had the joy of sharing a double bill with Diane Tell at Festival Pully-Lavaux in Switzerland, and she repeated the feat with Cyrille Aimée at the Festival de jazz de Québec. Composer, lyricist, arranger and producer, Sonia Johnson gained recognition with projects warmly welcomed by the industry as well as fans, namely the affectionate and well mastered Le Carré de nos amours, a true masterpiece that earned her the Juno for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2012.  In 2014, she had a second nomination at the Junos and ADISQ for Triades performed with singers Annie Poulain and Charles Biddle Jr. An inspired creator, she’s now proposing to uplift our spirit with “Le cœur à l’endroit” a vibrant opus of sincerity and harmony. She is performing with a sublime trio formed by pianist, composer, and arranger Marianne Trudel, double bass player Rémi-Jean Leblanc, and Jim Doxas on the drums.
