Since it’s début performance in 1998, the Joe Sullivan Big Band has become a major presence on the Canadian jazz scene. The group’s growing list of accomplishments includes numerous concert appearances, radio broadcasts and four critically acclaimed CD recordings. The group has received numerous grants from the Canadian and Québec arts councils and was twice nominated for a Prix Opus. The ensemble is anchored by one of Canada’s finest rhythm sections in André White (piano) Alec Walkington (bass) and Dave Laing (drums). It also features an all-star cast of Quebec’s top jazz soloists, including Lorne Lofsky, Al Mclean, André Leroux, Aron Doyle, Dave Grott and Jean-Nicholas Trottier. The band performs from a large and varied repertoire of contemporary jazz compositions, principally by Sullivan and Jean Fréchette.

Peter Leitch was an acclaimed New York-based composer, guitarist, author, photographer and

orchestrator who placed regularly in DownBeat’s International Jazz Critics Poll.

Peter and his various ensembles regularly appeared at festivals and clubs internationally.

Versatile in a broad range of jazz artistry, he performed and recorded with some of jazz's

greatest performers, including musical giants Oscar Peterson, Ron Carter, Milt Jackson,

Woody Shaw, Pepper Adams, Jaki Byard, Jack McDuff, Kenny Wheeler, Al Grey and John

Hicks.

Peter was also an accomplished photographer, producing several solo exhibitions of his work,

which strikingly chronicled fellow musicians, New York street scenes, Mississippi and the South.

In 2013, he published an acclaimed autobiography, Off The Books: A Jazz Life, which revealed

yet another talent. His remembrances, notably of a stark upbringing in working class East End

Montreal in the 1950s, revealed his gift in evoking the bleakness of this bygone era. In the work,

he frankly detailed his subsequent addictions as well as his successful recovery, and finally

settling with his lifetime love, Sylvia Levine.

In 1997, Peter initiated his Sunday Nights at Walker's, one of New York City's longest running

jazz engagements. Each weekly engagement featured a duo performance with a guest artist.

Gary Bartz, Ray Drummond, Bobby Watson, Sean Smith, Harvie S, Dwayne Burno, Steve

Wilson, Jed Levy and Charles Davis shared the spotlight in this enduring series.

In 1991, Peter was artist-in-residence at Western Australia Academy of the Performing Arts

(Perth) and the Elder Conservatorium (Adelaide). He was also adjunct professor at Long Island

University; the National Guitar Workshop; the Vermont Jazz Center; the Summer Guitar

Workshop at New York University and at Berkeley College of Music. He conducted workshops,

master classes and clinics in jazz guitar and improvisation throughout the world. His recordings

are available on the Jazz House Reservoir, Concord and Criss Cross labels.

Dirigé par le guitariste Nicolas Lanctôt, Longtoe est un ensemble instrumental montréalais fondé en 2019. Inspiré par Cannonball Adderley, Ernest Ranglin et le Baobab Orchestra, le groupe mélange le jazz hard bop au reggae et au afrobeat, créant un univers sonore unique et envoûtant. Avec deux albums à son actif, Longtoe s’est produit à travers le Québec, et son dernier album a fait le tour du monde, notamment avec des critiques venant du Mexique et de l’Europe de l’est. Actuellement en création d’un troisième album, ce groupe saura plaire à un public varié grâce à ses mélodies accrocheuses et à ses rythmes enlevants.

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas Mingus, c’est un des piliers de la musique jazz américaine. Le contrebassiste s’est montré un compositeur prolifique en écrivant des centaines, voire des milliers de morceaux des années 50 aux années 70, et il était réputé pour ses improvisations et mille variations en concert. Son approche de la musique lui a valu d’être perçu comme un des pionniers du free jazz.

Inutile de dire que les musiciens qui tentent de recréer une expérience à la Mingus doivent être fort talentueux et très concentrés afin de bien se synchroniser et de retomber pile sur les temps entre les parties plus improvisées. C’est ce que réussit parfaitement l’ensemble de Normand Guilbeault, contrebassiste québécois des plus reconnus, qui a réuni ici des musiciens jazz de renom tels que le très respecté Jean Derome au saxophone alto et baryton ainsi qu’à la flûte traversière, Mathieu Bélanger à la clarinette et à la clarinette basse, Ivanhoe Jolicoeur à la trompette et Claude Lavergne à la batterie.

L’ensemble existe depuis une vingtaine d’années et cette connaissance des autres, musicalement, est un atout indéniable pour faire vivre la musique de Mingus.
